HOPE was founded in 1989.  Our very first initiative was prompted by the fact that about 25% of the prison population were isolated within prison, and did not receive visits.  A small number of groups of volunteers were set up near prisons, and grew into the National Prison Visitors Scheme (NPVS),the only service of its kind in Scotland.

It soon became evident that prisoners’ families also had a need.  Indeed for many families it was they who appeared to be suffering most of all.  Many of these families felt vulnerable and unwanted, and it soon became clear that they too would have to be supported.

The focus in HOPE has always been jointly on prisoners and prisoners’ families. It has been this focus that has driven HOPE over the years to develop the variety of services that it provides.  HOPE is an innovative organisation which seeks to identify gaps in provision and tries to address these.

The mainstay of the organisation has been the volunteer base, over 130, supported by a staff that is determined to act for prisoners and their families.  It has also been part of the work at HOPE to raise awareness of the plight of such a vulnerable group in society and to help ex-offenders to resettle into the community after release.
